Abstract

1,208,784. Forming pneumatic tyres. CONTINENTAL GUMMI-WERKE A.G. 14 Nov., 1967 [20 Jan., 1967], No. 51832/67. Heading B7C. A method of forming a pneumatic tyre comprises forming at least one fabric ply into a cylindrical band upon a radially-expansible tyre-building drum, locating bead rings around the band adjacent to its edges, and expanding that part of the band between the bead rings so that it is turned outwardly over the bead rings to contact and adhere to those parts of the band located outside the bead rings. As shown, the tyre-building drum comprises a radially-expansible cover 3 mounted on drum ends 2. Axially-displaceable and rotatable slide members 5, each bearing a segment 7 supported on an inflatable member 6, are located adjacent to the drum ends. To form a tyre blank a cylindrical band is formed on the drum, bead rings 11 are located adjacent the edges of the band, inflatable members 6 are inflated to bring the edges 10 of the band above and to the side of the bead rings, and the drum is inflated such that the central part 12 of the band is brought into contact with the edges 10 of the band. An axially-slidable tubular ring 18 may be used to assist in the contacting of part 12 with edges 10. Additional inflatable members 9 may be provided on segments 7.
