Abstract
1,208,781. Foamed polyamides. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 May, 1968 [9 June, 1967], No. 26792/67. Headings C3C and C3R. Rigid polyamide foams are made by maintaining at a temperature above the melting point of the polyamide a mixture comprising the polyamide, a blowing agent and a crosslinking agent for the polyamide, whereby foaming occurs and then cooling below the melting point to solidify the polyamide. The polyamide may be polycaprolactam or polyhexamethylene adipamide. The blowing agent may be carbonate, . bicarbonate, oxamate, azide, hydrazide, azodicarbonamide or semicarbazide, or a depolymerized polymer, e.g. polymethyl-methacrylate. The mixture may also contain a polymerization catalyst, e.g. cyclohexylphosphonic acid. The cross-linking agent may be a bishexamethylenetriamine or hydroxyhexamethylenediamine adipic acid complex.
