Abstract
1,208,748. Phosphorus-containing flame retardants. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 19 Dec., 1967, No. 57594/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] A compound having flame-retardant properties is prepared by reacting an ammonia/phosphorus pentoxide condensate (produced by heating P 2 O 5 with excess NH 3 at temperatures in excess of 100‹ C.) with a compound of formula R-[Q(H) n ] m where R is C 1-30 hydrocarbon, Q is oxygen or nitrogen, n is 1 or 2 and is equal to the valence of Q - 1, and m is 1 to 8 but is no greater than the number of carbon atoms in R. The reaction is generally carried out from 140‹ to 220‹ C. when Q is 0 or at 60‹ to 220‹ C. when Q is N. Atmospheric or sub-atmospheric pressure may be used. Catalysts may be employed. The products are used to increase the flame-retardance of synthetic resins.
