Abstract
1,208,472. Light guides. RANK ORGANISATION Ltd. Feb.28, 1969 [Feb.28, 1968], No.9585/68. Heading G2J. A method of forming a light guide comprises winding a light transmitting filament on to a former 13 whilst effecting relative movement between the former and a guide holding the filament, so that the filament is laid repeatedly over the same endless loop which has at least one crossing point, the bundle formed being severed to give the guide. The former 13 is rotated about its axis 14 whilst the guide is moved longitudinally relative to the former so as to form a figure of eight loop which is severed at the crossing point X-X to give a "Y" guide; if the bundle is also severed at Z two "Y" guides result. The winding may be such that severing at the crossover point gives a "multitailed" guide Fig. 4 (not shown), or the filament may be wound in a sinuous manner Fig. 5 (not shown), or as a re-entrant helix, Fig.6, wherein severing at A gives a long straight guide. The junction of the "Y" guide may be strengthened before or after severing by binding; alternatively the crossing point may be extended circumferentially.
