Abstract

1,139,573. Continuous winding. JOHNSON, MATTHEY & CO. Ltd. 5 July, 1966 [17 May, 1965], No. 20684/65. Heading D1J. Wire (or thread) issuing continuously from a fabrication or treatment station 10 is automatically wound onto a plurality of spools e.g. 16, 18, by winding the wire onto a first spool, 18, then causing the wire to be continued to be wound on one or more spools, 16, in succession while maintaining the path of the running wire unaltered. The wire on the first and successive spools is automatically severed from the running wire on the respective succeeding spool. As shown wire is wound by passing the wire 11 through an apertured guide 14 on each of the spools, e.g. 16, that are to be wound up after the first spool 18 is full of wire. When spool 18 is full, spool 16 is rotated to wind - the wire about it and sever the partion of wire between the full and adjacent empty spool. Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) illustrate the wire passing through 4 and 2 spools respectively before being wound onto spool 18 the apertured guide 14 may be a hole or a radially extending slot (20), see Fig. 2 (not shown). In the latter case the slot should be in such a direction that the wire does not move out of it.
