Abstract

1,208,028. Washing hollow-ware. G. CONTE. 19 June, 1968 [28 June, 1967], No. 29184/68. Heading B8T. An apparatus for cleaning scientific glassware with recirculated de-ionized water checked for conductivity comprises a plastics housing provided with a horizontal partition 2 sloping towards a central drain 3 opening into a tank 4 having a transverse wall 5 supporting a cell 7 for measuring the conductivity of the water. A pipe dipping into a central well 10 provided in the tank leads to a pump 11 for forcing water through one or more ion-exchange columns 13 to pipes 17 and 18, pipe 17 leading to a test tube washer 21 and pipe 18 to discharge outlets 18a and a pipette washer 20. Valves 15, 22 control the flow to the various washers. Pump 11 and columns 13, which columns may be interchangeable, are supported in a lower housing 12 to which the upper housing is pivoted at 19. An upper partition 24, 25 can support larger articles of glassware. The pipe 3b leading to the conductivity cell is arranged to extend about 1 cm. above the drain so that only water from one of the discharge outlets 30, 31 or from a funnel 27 and tube 28 passes through the cell, and not water draining through the drain. Thus, water from any of the washing devices can be checked by moving appropriate device outlet over the tube 3b. Specific resistances in the region of 5-6 Megohms can easily be obtained, even though the apparatus is open to the atmosphere.
