1,198,529. Delivering measured quantities of liquid. ANDREAS HETTICH ZENTRIFUGEN UND APPARATEBAU. 1 Sept., 1967 [1 Sept., 1966], No. 40050/67. Heading B8N. [Also in Division B1] A method of washing samples (e.g. of blood) in test tubes with predetermined quantities of liquids and of emptying the tubes, such as for use in blood-group serology, comprises pumping the liquid from a storage tank 1 into a measuring chamber 5 via a pump 3 and then distributing the liquid simultaneously, by means of a distributing block 6, into a number of test tubes 15, the liquid being afterwards withdrawn by suction simultaneously from all the test tubes. The distributing block 6 is formed from two plates 36, 37 screwed together, the plate 36 being provided with an inlet connection 33 communicating via ports 34 and a groove 35 with outlet passages 12, one for each test tube; conical surfaces 19 are formed around the outlets in order to centralize the test tubes 15 held in a frame 31 in which an observation window is provided. A pair of three-way valves 2, 4 positioned as shown in Fig. 1 permit liquid to be drawn from the storage tank 1 by the pump 3 and then fed to the measuring chamber 5. When the level of liquid reaches an electronic senser 10 in the chamber, the pump is automatically switched off and the positions of the valves changed manually. The pump is again switched on so that it draws the liquid from the measuring chamber and feeds it to the distributing block 6; when the liquid level falls to the lower end of a second electronic senser 11 the pump is switched off. The liquid is removed from the test tubes by means of a block (9, Fig. 5) having a number of tubes 41 adapted to enter the test tubes, the depth of entry being determined by means of an adjustable plate (13).
