1,207,886. Printing apparatus; ticket fraud preventing. IMPRIMERIE CHAIX-DESFOSSES-NEDGRAVURE. 8 April, 1968 [8 May, 1967], No. 16768/68. Headings B6A and B6C. Ticket or other document 1 is printed with line pattern 2 and with rings of digits 3, then number-printing apparatus is used to print numerals 125.6 on it and simultaneously each ring 3 is covered with an incomplete masking circle 4, which leaves one digit from each ring 3 untouched to form the complete serial number 125,624. The right-hand masking circle may be rotated by one digit space as each of a succession of tickets 1 is numbered, and the left-hand masking circle be similarly rotated at every tenth ticket. Forging of a serial number entails masking of one or more untouched digits and cleaning of one or more masked ones which may be printed in an ink so related to the masking ink that the mask cannot be eliminated without affecting it. Alternatively one or three, or even all, of the digits of the serial number may be produced by selective masking of undesired digits of a series, and other symbols, such as letters, may replace digits. The symbols may be arranged in concentric, rather than side by side, rings, or may be printed in columns, in which case masking may be by a plurality of aligned squares, overprinted on all but one symbol in each column. The masks and symbols applied at the same time may be printed by mechanism carried in a reciprocating bed, which co-operates with an axially fixed cylinder which carries the tickets, and the masking of the symbols may be changed at each reciprocation by ratchetwheel and pawl mechanisms actuated by movement of the bed. The ticket may be of paper, cardboard or plastics material, the first stage of printing may be by offset lithography or by printing from a plate and masking and printing of additional symbols may be by typographic printing. Alternatively symbols applied in the first stage may be cancelled by perforation or embossing.
