A process for producing a pure aliphatic solvent comprises (a) contacting a hydrocarbon feedstock containing at least one aromatic hydrocarbon and at least one C 6 -C 9 non- aromatic hydrocarbon with a primary solvent selective for aromatics in a first extraction zone; (b) separately withdrawing from the extraction zone a first extract stream comprising primary solvent and aromatics and a first raffinate stream comprising non-aromatics and contaminated with primary solvent and more than 1% by vol. of aromatics; (c) recovering aromatics from the first extract stream; (d) contacting the contaminated first raffinate stream with a secondary solvent comprising water in a second extraction zone; (c) separately withdrawing from the second extraction zone a second raffinate comprising non-aromatics of reduced solvent content and a second extract stream containing water and a primary solvent; (f) hydrogenating the second raffinate stream using a catalyst to convert aromatics to naphthenes; (g) recovering from the hydrogenation effluent a fraction comprising the C 6 -C 9 non-aromatic hydrocarbon containing less than 1% by vol. aromatics and less than 10 ppm. of primary solvent. The example describes the separation of benzene from a hexane feedstock using a sulpholane as primary solvent. Hydrogenation conditions may comprise 200-480‹ C., 14-136 atmospheres gauge, LHSV 0À05 to 1.0 and a catalyst containing nickel.
