Abstract

1,207,531. Topping-up system. ELECTRIC POWER STORAGE Ltd. 26 Jan., 1968 [27 Jan., 1967], No. 4181/67. Heading H1B. A topping-up system for an electric battery comprises (a) level control devices 13, through which liquid is supplied to each cell 11, until it reaches a predetermined level, (b) a secondary reservoir 21 or 22, above the battery and in communication with the cells through the level control devices and (c) a primary reservoir 20, above the secondary reservoir and communicating with it through a valve 27, which is controlled by the liquid level in the secondary reservoir and maintains this level constant. In the embodiment shown liquid flow from the primary reservoir 20 to the secondary reservoir is also controlled by a solenoid operated valve 32 which can be arranged to open automatically on performance of another operation carried out in prepering the battery for topping-up. Two secondary reservoirs, 21 and 22, each containing a float valve 27 control the liquid supply to the cells. In an alternative embodiment there may be a secondary reservoir for each cell in direct communication with the level control device for that cell. In this case the reservoir may be mounted above, on or inside the cell. The level control device may be of the float type as shown or of the air-lock type. When all the cells are full any excess liquid entering the battery may be collected and pumped back to the primary reservoir.
