Abstract

1,207,488. Magnetic structures. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 4 Dec., 1967 [5 Dec., 1966], No. 54273/66. Heading H1H. [Also in Divisions C7 and H3] In a magnetic store (see Division H3) a wire is coated with a ferrite. The coating is applied by immersing the wire and an electrode in a liquid such as alcohols, ketones, esters, hydrocarbons on pure water containing a suspension of ferrite particles, applying a potential difference to the wire and electrode to cause electrophoretic deposition of the particles on the wire until the deposits coalesce and sintering the deposits. In an example the ferrite solution comprises a manganese-magnesium ferrite, presintered and ground to mixed particle sizes of the order of one micron or less, absolute ethanol, Shellac solution and ferric chloride solution. Voltages from 6 to 120 volts are applied across the wire and electrode for one to two minutes. After deposition sintering is carried out by heating in air to 1360‹ C. for 20 hours, allowing to cool to 110‹ C., changing the atmosphere to nitrogen and maintaining the temperature at 1100‹ C. for 2 hours and allowing to cool to ambient temperature. In order to reduce strain in the ferrite during or after sintering an underlayer of a low melting point or easily oxidizable conductive material may be deposited on the wires before the ferrite, which layer is then melted or oxidized away. The sintering may be carried out by heating the electrical conductor in a controlled atmosphere. The wire may be a noble metal such as platinum or platinum alloy.
