Abstract

1311330 Electro-deposition of Ni-Fe and Ni-Sn on wire SOC INDUSTRIELLE HONEYWELL BULL 1 July 1970 [2 July 1969] 32033/70 Headings C7A and C7B [Also in Division H1] A Ni-Sn alloy layer (29-37% Ni, balance Sn) is electrolytically deposited on a magnetic film (e.g. Fe-Ni alloy) carried by an electrically conductive substrate. The Ni-Sn layer is at least 5000 angtroms thick while being thin enough (e.g. a few microns) to suppress eddy currents in the substrate. In one embodiment, a copper-coated beryllium-copper wire is moved through a tank wherein it is coated electrolytically with a nickeliron alloy (about 18% Fe). The Ni-Sn alloy is the deposited from a bath containing Sn Cl 2 , 2H 2 O, NiCl 2 6H 2 O, NH 4 F, HF and NH 4 OH at pH 2À5 and 55-70‹ C. The wire is used as the cathode and is surrounded by a Ni anode. A 36% Ni alloy is obtained by operating at 65‹C and 26MA/cm<SP>2</SP> with a 1 minute immersion time.
