Abstract
1,207,324. Binding particulate or fibrous material. HARDMAN & HOLDEN Ltd. 21 Aug., 1968 [24 May, 1967], No.. 24225/67. Heading C3N. Particulate or fibrous material, e.g. sand, is bound with a composition comprising (a) a liquid, oil-soluble basic salt of a carboxylic acid in which the metal is from Group II or III of the Periodic Table according to Mendeleev, and (b) an organic acidic material. It is preferred that the carboxylic acid residues of the said basic salts are those of unsaturated drying oil fatty acids; e.g. linseed oil, dehydrated castor oil or tall oil fatty acids. Suitable compounds for component (a) are reaction products of aluminium alkoxides with water and fatty acids derived from drying and semi-drying oils, the reaction products of divalent metal acyloxides with aluminium alkoxides and water, e.g. zinc alumino tallate, and the " overbased " alkaline earth metal soaps or salts. The organic acid material may be any carboxylic or sulphonic acid, the carboxylic acids preferably being unsaturated, e.g. tall oil fatty acids, linseed oil fatty acids, stearin pitches and similar polymeric compounds obtainable in fatty acid distillation processes, and dicarboxylic acids. The organic acidic material may also be an acidic polyester of the alkyd type, formed by the reaction of ethylene glycol, glycerol or pentaerythritol with an excess of a mixture of a drying oil fatty acid and phthalic acid or anhydride, isophthalic acid, azelaic acid, or trimellitic acid, or a mixture thereof. The basic salt and/or the organic acidic material may contain unsaturated acid residues capable of oxidative polymerization, which may be accelerated by incorporating paint driers, e.g. cobalt, manganese, lead or calcium soaps and per-compounds. When the two components of the binder are mixed they react to form a thermoplastic solid which is apparently a complex metallic soap. The bound material finds use in foundry cores and flooring tiles.
