Abstract

1,207,143. Transformers and inductors. HIGH VOLTAGE ENG. CORP. 3 Nov., 1967 No. 50168/67. Heading H1T. A transformer or reactor for high voltage has a plurality of magnetic legs inter-connected by yokes 31, 32 (Fig. 2) the legs including or being formed of insulated magnetic segments connected to associated coils of the windings surrounding the legs. The device shown in Fig. 2 is a step-down auto-transformer having four series windings 41-44 and four common windings 45-48 and is suitable for one phase of a three phase system. A core having three segmented legs with associated phase windings is described (Fig. 7, not shown). A reactor having two wound segmented limbs is also described. Each limb is formed of insulated segments 104, 104A (Fig. 13) all of which, except the centre segments 104A, are surrounded by and connected to coils 108 of the associated winding. In addition to insulating separators 106, resilient spacers 10 may be provided to form channels for cooling fluid. Equipotential hoops 110 may also be provided. The laminations forming the core segments may be specially shaped (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown). The insulating discs separating the core segments and coils may have anti-tracking configurations (73, 78, Figs. 6A and 6B, not shown) and may be coated with semi-conducting material (72). The core segments form in effect a capacitor chain which reduces the effect of transient voltages. Each core segment 104 (Fig. 20) may be associated with two disc coils 119, 120 and they may be separated from the adjacent segment and coils by insulating discs 130, 131 having a conducting grid 116 between them and provided with an edge ring coated with conducting material. The core segments 104 may be moulded into stackable dielectric spools on which the winding coils are wound. The reactor may have two parallel windings on each core leg, its core parts may be clamped together by the rods 98 (Fig. 15) and springs 128. To create turbulence in the insulating fluid foils 126 and baffles 127 may be provided.
