Abstract

1,082,346. Transformers and inductors. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. May 4, 1964 [May 17, 1963], No. 19708/63. Heading H1T. [Also in Division H2] A single or multiphase transformer, saturable inductor or a combination of the two (Fig. 9) has a plurality of magnetic cores 3 per phase each carrying a low current (primary or control) winding 2, 22 and high current windings formed of two bar conductors associated with rectifiers U 1 , U 2 so as to conduct alternately, conduction by the two bar conductors linking any core being in opposite directions with respective thereto. The apparatus may be mounted in an oil tank with the bars passing through the tank lid and providing a mounting for the rectifiers. The cores may be uncut and of wound grain-oriented strip or of C parts held by a clamping band and adjacent cores may be supported from one another by moulded spacing pieces. The inductor and transformer cores may be intermingled. The control windings may be connected in series and the transformer primary windings in parallel and may be arranged for either connection as desired. In another embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) a three-phase transformer arrangement comprises bar secondaries (1) connected in zig-zag and linking magnetic cores (3), the primary windings not being shown. A three-phase arrangement may be made by connecting together three single-phase arrangements.
