Abstract
1,206,895. Elastomeric bush mountings. R. JORN. 4 Sept., 1968 [4 Sept., 1967], No. 42057/68. Heading F2S. A component, constituting the inner end intermediate sleeves of a bushing comprising an elastomeric sleeve sandwiched between inner and outer rigid sleeves, consists of a metal tube 1, Fig. 1, on which is bonded a rubber or like sheath 2, the ends of which project beyond the ends of the tube. In at least one (as shown, both) of the sheath ends is a groove 9 or 12 and at the, or one of the, grooved ends the sheath has an annular collar 3. Bonded to the axially inner face of this collar is a metal ring 4. Other features which may but need not be provided are: a second metal ring 7 on the outer face of the collar; further rubber 8 surmounting this second ring; an additional annular groove at the un-collared end of the sheath; and a tubular metal reinforcing element embedded in the rubber. These last two features are present in Fig. 2 (not shown). The bushing of Fig. 5 is assembled by fitting two of the Fig. 1 components into a metal sleeve 16 and axially compressing them by a bolt 27 until their rubber sheaths are the same length as their respective tubes 1. The bushing of Fig. 9 is assembled by precompressing the sheaths before the components are located between the cheeks 19a, 20a, which correspond to the frame elements 19, 20 of Fig. 5. The Fig. 9 bushing consists of two modified bush components of a form depicted in Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) in which the ends of the inner tubes 1 are each adapted to receive a flange 30 for precompressing the collar of the sheath and a spring ring 31 for coupling the two tubes together in abutting relationship and so precompressing the other ends of the sheaths. Both the bushings shown are arranged to be stressed torsionally when a rod 17 attached to the outer tube 17 is turned about the axis of the inner tube 1.
