Abstract

[Also in Division B6] An article comprising an elongated core 12, Fig. 5, such as a pencil lead, a crayon, or a ballpoint-pen refill, and an outer casing 14, has the casing formed with a lining of thermoplastic material, the core being inserted whilst the lining is in a plastic condition, so that when the plastic sets, the core and casing are bonded together. The lining is of foamed plastic material and is provided with a rigid outer covering of non-foamed plastic. The casings 14 are formed by extruding thermoplastic material 22 containing a suitable foaming agent through an outlet 24. Surrounding the outlet 24 is a chamber 28 to which non-foamed plastic material 30 is fed to form the rigid outer covering. The chamber 28 may have ribs extending across it to form ribs on the outside of the casing instead of a continuous outer covering. Subsequently, the extruded material passes through a cooling bath 36, and transporting means 38, and is severed by a cutter 40 into lengths. An axial hole is now formed in each casing 14 by means of a heated probe 42, or, if such a hole is formed during extrusion, the probe enlarges the hole. The probe also melts the surface of the hole, and as the probe is withdrawn a pencil lead 12 is pushed into the casing from the opposite end. If the lead 12 is preheated, it can be used to form the hole, thus dispensing with the probe. Polystyrene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene of suitable density may be the plastic employed. The structure of the foamed plastic material is similar to that of wood so that a conventional pencil sharpener may be used. The probe 42, Fig. 4, comprises a nichrome wire 44 within a suitable casing 46 with an end 48 of the wire exposed and electrically joined as by silver solder to an outer stainless steel casing 52. The casing 52 and wire 44 are connected to a power source 56.
