Abstract
1,206,592. Digital position encoding. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 22 May, 1968 [22 May, 1967], No. 23713/67. Heading G4H. A device for measuring the relative position of two parts of a machine tool comprises a rigid beam 1 to be mounted on one part and a measuring head 3 moving with the other part movable along the beam, the head having means for scanning an optical grating 11 carried on the beam to provide an electrical output indicating the position of the head within one of a number of short distances (e.g. 1 inch) along the beam and a rotary transducer driven through a pinion from a rack 21 on the beam giving a coarse indication of the position. The grating 11 is mounted over a window 9 in the beam and is scanned by light from lamp 13 and lens 15. The grating has three zones, each sensed by four photo-cells 17. The grating may be reflective instead of transmissive, and formed on the beam itself. Rack 21 drives a rotary encoder giving a decimal indication of each 0À1 inch of travel up to one inch, another encoder indicating inches of travel, and a third encoder indicates tens of inches. These may be as described in Specification 1,206,591.
