Abstract

1,206,590. Sub-press mechanism. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 13 Dec., 1967 [13 Dec., 1966], No. 55853/66. Heading B3W. [Also in Division F2] A device for absorbing the energy of a moving mass comprises a buffer of resilient material, e.g. polyurethane, deformable by the mass, and means being provided for restricting the deformation of the buffer. In a die punch, Fig. 1, the top plate 5 carrying the punch 6 is guided by pillars 3, 4 each of which has at its base a cupshaped member 9 containing resilient material 8, engageable by the portion 10 of the plate 5. In a bar-cropping die, Pig. 5, a fixed blade 17 is secured to the base 16 by a ring 18 and an adjuster 19. A blade extension 20 supports the bar 21 and a moving blade 22 is slidably supported in the base member 16 by a back-plate 23. The portion of the bar to be cropped off is backed by a portion 24 of a plunger 25 cooperating with a resilient body 26 confined in the compartment 27. The moving blade 22 may be struck by the impulsed member of an impulse machine (not shown). The buffer and the limiting means may be shaped to give, in operation, a control of energy absorption, Fig. 3 (not shown). The buffer means may also comprise a number of resilient masses with interposed rigid plates, Fig. 4 (not shown.).
