Abstract
1206473 Cooling cables BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd and CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD 7 March 1969 [7 March 1968] 11179/68 Headings H1A and A4D A super-conducting cable installation comprises two or more coaxial conductors 1 maintained in the super-conductive state by a cryogenic fluid e.g. helium, flowing in a first direction through or around or between the conductors in spaces as 2, and by one or more heat shields 4, surrounding the cable in which the fluid, possibly together with further fluid-flows in the opposite direction at a higher temperature as part or all of the cooling fluid for the heat shield(s). The heat shield is a metal tube divided into two thermally insulated parts 5, 6, one of the parts being cooled by the fluid flowing in the second direction through ducts 7, and the other by the further fluid returning in the first direction through ducts 8. When more than one heat shield is involved, the outer shield may be separately cooled or the same fluid flowing in the inner shield made to pass through the outer shields in opposite directions and having different temperatures. Fig. 2 (not shown), indicates an arrangement involving three refrigeration stations for supplying the fluid at the required temperatures.
