The belt 1 of an endless conveyer is driven by two drums 2, 3 and its two runs are drivingly connected by rollers 4 which are movable vertically above support rollers 6. Rollers 5 also support the belt which is initially tensioned by a device 7. The distances ¢S max. represent the maximum belt tensions occurring in the conveyer of the invention (full line) and in a conventional type of conveyer (dashed line). When the conveyer has a troughed belt, Fig. 2a, the roller 4 of a troughing roller assembly extends below a support 8 to engage the lower belt run.
