Abstract

[Also in Division B8] In a bread toaster, a movable conveying member 3 of inverted U-form and provided with teeth 3a slidably houses a T- shaped beam 1 which, due to supports 4 located in slots 4a, 4b has limited horizontal movement within the member 3. A compression spring 7 engages an H-shaped member 6 which slides in a slot 7a and which is normally urged downwardly against pins 11. A further spring 17 urges the beam 1 to the left within the members 3, as shown in Fig. 1. The upper bounderies of slots 2 form a stop for the beam 1, 1a, 1b, and the action of a stop 8 on the member 3 is adjustable by a manually rotatable cam 9. A crank pin 12 is motor driven via gearing 15, 16. In operation, bread slices 20 are placed on a plate 19 of the toaster and when the crank is rotated from the Fig. 1 position, the beam 1 and hence the conveying member 3 move upwardly and to the left, lifting the bread 20 until the beam portions 1a, 1b, abut the upper ends of the slots 2. The member 3 is next urged to the right by the action of the crank 12 in the slot 7a while upward movement of the crank 12 is permitted by compression of the spring 7. This travel to the right, against the pressure of the spring 17, is limited by the adjustable stop 8, which thus controls the displacement of the bread 20 per revolution of the crank. The bread 20 is guided by plates 21, which may be of quartz glass, and is toasted by column-like heaters 23 provided with reflectors 25. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, a member 28 slidable in an opening 32 in the beam 1 is normally urged to the left by a spring 29. The beam 1 is first moved to the left by the crank 12 which, with its vertical movement, engages a spring rod 31 to move the beam to its upper limit. The rod 31 then flexes during the further upward movement of the crank 12 which, in moving to the right, moves the slidable member 28, together with the beam 1.
