m'clai s. (01.30-208) The invention relates to cutters, and more particularly to clippers used in cutting hair. 1 V This application is a substitute for my prior "abandoned application serial No. 588,061, filed January 22, 19'32. l The hair clippers used in cutting hair have the objectionable feature that thes'trands 'of hair "do not enter-the inter-space between the cutting "teeth so that athorough cutting of the hair is 'diflicult, if not impossible. r 7 T It, therefore, constitutes an object of the invention to provide-means for positively forc'ing "'the 'hair into the cutting zone so that they are exposed tothe cutting action of the teethof a T PB A'furtherobject aims at providing a gatherer for the hair to force the hair between the cutting teeth of. the clipper.

Fig. 12is anendview' ofoth'e part shown in r Fig. 1 1, and, 4 i530 IEig.l3is a section .on the linefI3j-I3 ofj-Fig'. 5. The clipper per se" does notforma part of the rinvention, and onlys uchparts thereof will be' ireferred-to as are-necessaryfor an understanding of the invention;
j'is'alofan-obf ctf f theiiriyention to provide fa 'hair giatherer which; upon' 'actuation of the clip- ,per, reciprocates in a direction-transversefito the r The gatherer comprises an attachment and ineludes a base plate in which at the front end has teeth II and I2 constituting guide ledges which are at the endcf the plate, as will be evident by reference to Fig.4.
The base plate Ill is formed with a depressed portion I3 at the center of the plateand originating at the-front edge and terminating short of the rear end. To the bottom of the depression 13 is secured a leaf spring 14 which extends toward the rear end of the plate andrises in a 10 curved tend l5 bent to form a bead or bulge I6 which serves as a guide spring for a purpose hereinafter further referred to.
The base plate 10 is formed withside walls I! d I8 extending from the rear end of th plate 5 to about the-center thereof, and adjacent to each side wall is a column I9 and 20, respectively, which define thereupon a gap 2|. To each 001- umn and at the front thereof is secured a spring "22 which extends horizontally and downwardly 20 to'be within the horizontal plane defined by the side walls I! and I8 and overlies a cam 23 engaging-the forward end of the cam.
The side walls 11 and I8 are provided on the inner side with horizontal-grooves 24. v25
Bearings 25 and 26 are respectively secured .to the columns I9 and 20 to receive therein a horizontal pin 21 which extends througha lever 28,
having its lower end bifurcated as at 29 to receive therein an irregularly shaped link 30. and 0 connected thereto'by a pin 3|. i
The link 30 is formed'intermediate its ends with a lug 32 adapted to engage a horizontal roller 33 entering columns I9. and 20.
' As shown in Fig. 6, the gatherer comprises a plate 34 shaped as a comb having a plurality of. teeth 35 which are constructed like arrow heads.
The plate 34 is'extended into a shank 36 which is provided with downwardly extending lugs 3'! which are provided with heads 38 adapted to travel in'the grooves 24in the reciprocation of the gatherer as will be hereinafterfurther explained. The shank 36' is formed with a rectangular extension 39.
springs 22 and the upper side of the cams 23 and" upon leaving contact with the springs, the pin 43 drops to continue its travel on the under-side of V the cams at which time the lever 28 is on its return stroke, and causes the gatherer to move backward with the front end thereof, however, in
raised position until the lug 32 of the link 30 enters into engagement with the pin 33, at which time the pivotal connection 46, 41 is raised caus-' ing the front end of the gatherer to be lowered.
At the same'time the bead |6 of the spring I 4 causes thepin 43 to be placed into the upper side 'of the cams 23 preparatory to the ensuing movement toward the left whereupon the cycle is re- .peated.
The clipper per se comprises handles and 5| which actuate cutters 52 and 53, itbeing understood that upon closing of the handles the upper cutter member 52 is moved laterally and upon release of the handles on the spring pressure, the upper cutter member moves into original position.
The reciprocation of the upper cutter member will produce a cutting action by the lower cutter member 53, as will be understood by those versed in the art.
To the handle 5| is secured a plate, 54 which is provided with an upright post 55.to which is pivotally secured a horizontal lever 56 provided with a central slot 51 connected at the outer end to a link 58 to which is rigidly secured a lever 59, so that the lever 56, the link 58 and the lever 59 constitute a rigid system.
The outer end of the lever 59 is connected with the handle 56 by a turn buckle 60 in order to adjust the distance to the outer lever end 59 with respect to the handle to vary the range of movement of the lever 56.
A horizontal link 6| underlies the lever 56 and is secured thereto by a screw 62. The link 6| is bifurcated at either end and receives at the for-' ward end a member 63 secured to the link 6| by a pin 64.
The member 63 is aperturedas at 65 to receive a pin 66 at the upper end of the lever 28. V
The bifurcated rear end of the link 6| has a horizontal pin 6'! which extends through a slot 68 in the upper end of a curved lever 69 which extends through an elongated slot ill of the plate 54.
The lever 69 is pivotally secured as at II in a pendent bearing I2 secured to the underside of the plate 54.
The plate 54 at the rear end is turned upward and then horizontally to form a horizontal guide plate 13 provided with a slot 14 in which the curved lever 69 reciprocates.
From the foregoing, it is clear that upon actuation of the handle 59, the lever system 56, 58, and 59 is oscillated about the upright post 55 causing the link 6| to reciprocate, and, this reciprocation is participated in by the lever 69 and the lever 28, which latter executes a reciprocating movement at its lower end causing reciprocation of the gatherer 34, as has been previously described.
apnoea In order to secure the gatherer and its associated parts in proper position a clipper holdermember '15 is provided which is secured at I6 to the body member 11 of the clipper proper, and such holder member is extended and is secured at its ends 18, and is provided with inwardly directed lugs 79 which enter corresponding grooves in thebase plate H] as shown in Fig. 8.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the op ,eration of the device is obvious. Upon reciprocation of the handle 5|] the gatherer 34 is actuated to project forwardly and downwardly so as to become anchored with the strands of hair, and
upon release or downward movement of the handle 59 the gatherer is brought back to original position, delivering the strands of hair into the interspace between the cutting teeth of the cutter members 52 and 53 thus insuring effective cutting of the hair.
It is noteworthy that a screw 80 is provided (Fig. 2) which adjusts the relative position between the base ||l of the gatherer and the cutting member 53, so thatthe cutting depth of the device may be regulated. gatherermay be used as a gauge for predetermining the extent to which hair iscut.
While the drawings show apreferred embodiment of the invention, numerous changes, alterations, and revisions may be made without depart- .ing from the spirit of the invention.
I, therefore, do not limit myself to the details of construction and arrangement of parts, as shown, but wish to include all changes, variations,
In other words, the I revisions and alterations constituting departures r within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim: 7 l
