Abstract
1,206,035. Diffraction gratings. D. RUDOLPH and G. SCHMAHL. Feb.9, 1968 [Feb.11, 1967], No.6494/68. Heading G2J. A photo-resist layer is placed in an interference pattern produced by two beams of coherent light and after development either used directly as a reflection or transmission grating or employed as a mask in forming such a grating. Beams from opposite ends of a laser may have their cross-sections enlarged by catoptric systems and then impinged on the photo-resist layer at such an angle between the beams as to form the desired grating spacing. After development the photo-resist layer may have a sinusoidal structure or a stepped surface, the former representing a blazed grating and the latter a normal one. The surface may be mirrored to form a reflection grating. In further forms a metal layer forms the backing and after development of the photo-resist the latter forms a mask for etching the metal layer. A mirroring film may be provided after etching and removal of the remaining photo-resist or may be provided between the metal layer and a glass backing.
