Abstract
1,206,006. Cyanuric acid. SHIKOKU KASEI KOGYO CO. Ltd. 25 Jan., 1968, No. 4068/68. Addition to 1,076,934. Heading C1A. Cyanuric acid is produced by heating urea and/or biuret below 400‹ C. in a reaction vessel on the surface of a molten metal having a melting-point not exceeding 350‹ C., between two horizontal rollers, each rotating in either direction, partly immersed in the molten metal, until a solid mass is formed which is further heated on said surface or subsequently to obtain a solid product containing cyanuric acid. The preferred temperature is 230-350‹ C. Metals specified are Sn, Bi, Pb and alloys of Sn, Sb and Pb, and of Bi, Cd, Pb and Sn. Preferably the starting material is urea which is delivered on to the melt's surface R. The rollers 4 become coated with a film of the molten metal and prevent adhesion of the reaction mixture to the tank. In the preferred apparatus, illustrated in Fig. 2, molten urea is delivered from a storage tank 5 both on to the surface of the metal between the rollers and to troughs 7 whence it overflows on to the side areas of the surface and moves towards the beginning of the reaction surface R. The rollers 4 may be formed with helical screws to deliver the reaction mixture from one end of the vessel. The solid is continuously withdrawn from the vessel by rollers 8 and granulated by crusher 9, and heated in a heating tank. By-products are hydrolysed by heating in aqueous mineral acid. The reaction vessel is sealed so as to simplify the collection of ammonia evolved in the reaction, and so as to simplify the recovery of the urea entrained in the ammonia, preferably by condensation at 100-130‹ C.
