Treating soil with flame; motor implements; cultivators; rotary drums, mounting; steering implements. - A machine for breaking up soil, treating it with heat, and returning the treated soil to its original position, comprises a travelling frame 19 carrying rotating disks 26 to break up the soil, an elevator 28 to lift the loose soil, and a rotating drum 30, in which the soil is subjected to the action of heat. The disks, elevator, drum, and the driving-wheels 21 of the vehicle are driven from a countershaft 23 driven by a motor 25. The drum 30 is mounted on rolls 31 carried by brackets 32 depending from the main frame 19. The countershaft 23 also drives the shaft 40 of a fan which directs a blast of air carrying with it fuel, such as coal-dust, from a hopper 42 to a burner 43 which directs a flame within the rotating drum. The end 44 of the drum is outwardly flared and i; provided with a similarly flared adjustable baffle plate 45, by which the treated soil is permitted to fall uniformly on a distributing plate 46. In a modification, the travelling frame is adapted to be hauled over the ground and is provided with one front steering-wheel actuated through worm-gear from a hand-wheel, and the rotating drum, which with its reversely rotating beaters is driven from the axle of the main wheels, is fed by an inclined scoop provided with a rotating beater.
