[Also in Division A5] A composition of matter comprises the reaction product of (a) a C 12-18 alkyl primary or secondary amine and (b) a phosphonic anhydride of general formula where n is greater than 2 and R is C 1-8 haloalkyl or a radical of formula where X is halogen and a, b, c and d are from 0 to 5. The reaction product comprises mainly the compound (claimed per se) of general formula where R is as above, R<SP>1</SP> is an -NR<SP>11</SP> 2 group and R<SP>11</SP> is C 12-18 alkyl or H with the proviso that only one R<SP>11</SP> in each -NR<SP>11</SP> 2 group can be H, and as by-products the compounds R-P(O)(NHR<SP>11</SP>) 2 and [R-PO 3 ]-[NH 3 R<SP>11</SP>]<SP>+</SP> 2 , where R is as above or is R<SP>11</SP>NH-(CH 2 ) n -, where n is 1 to 8 or the radical R<SP>11</SP> being as above. Reaction is effected by slowly combining the anhydride and amine at 50-150‹ C., usually in two steps by first reacting one mole of amine per mole of anhydride at 50-150‹ C. and then reacting the resultant compound with another mole of amine at 0-100‹ C. in the presence of an organic solvent. The products have pesticidal properties.
