Abstract

1,205,170. Lining tubes. AJINOMOTO CO. Inc. 18 Dec., 1968, No. 60233/68. Heading F2P. In apparatus for expanding a flexible, e.g. rubber, lining 8 or 23 into bonding relationship with the inner surface of an arcuate or straight tube, 7, or 24, respectively, which surface has previously been coated with adhesive, a stopper comprising a flexible washer or washers 9 or 22 is caused to travel through the lining by fluid pressure, e.g. compressed air or superheated steam (to cause simultaneous vulcanization), and means is provided for restraining the relative movement between the stopper and the tube so as to limit the speed of such movement and prevent the stopper from being ejected out of the end of the tube remote from that at which it is first inserted. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, the tube 7 is clamped concentrically to a rotary table (1, Fig. 1, not shown), and the stopper is secured by a nut to one end of a substantially rigid pipe 3 which passes through the lining and tube in an arc of the same radius as that of the tube and is clamped beyond the remote end of the tube to the table. The portion of the lining adjacent the end of the tube where the stopper was inserted, having been bonded to the tube manually prior to insertion of the stopper, is now sealed with a plate 11 and bolts 10, and air or steam are passed into the space between the stopper and plate 11 to cause movement of the tube relative to the stopper, allowed by the rotary table, whose rotational speed may be controlled manually, to bond the remainder of the lining to the tube. In the embodiment of Fig. 3, the tube 24 is fixed to a stationary support, a cable 29 is secured at one end to the stopper, which has two flexible washers 22, a plate 32, carrying an inlet 31 for air or steam and a sealed aperture 30 for the cable 29, is secured by bolts 33 to the end of the tube at which the stopper has been inserted, the other end of the cable is wound around a drum which is braked to a predetermined extent, and the air or steam is supplied to the inlet 31, whereby the stopper is moved through the tube at a speed determined by the amount of braking applied to the drum and stops moving when the cable is fully paid out, which is arranged to be when the plunger has reached the other end of the tube.
