Abstract
1,205,019. Oral dosage forms. STERWIN A.G. 7 Dec., 1967 [7 Dec., 1966], No. 54875/ 66. Heading A5B. A solid oral unit dosage form comprises a medicament, and 50-85% by weight of a pharmaceutically acceptable base material and 1-30% by wt of a plasticiser for said base material, the plasticiser and base material forming a mixture which is water-soluble, has a m.p. without charring or other decomposition between 35‹ and 90‹C and acts as a solvent for the medicament when in the molten state. The dosage forms may be prepared by dissolving the medicament in a melt of the base and plasticiser and allowing drops to fall through a cooling atmosphere on to a cool surface and allowing the mixture to solidify, usually yielding a form that is flat on one side and curved convexly on the other. Medicaments referred to are isoprenaline and its salts, alkaloids e.g. caffeine, glyceryl trinitrite, vitamins e.g. A, D or riboflavin, an aromatic mixture acting as a breath freshener and a sugar substitute e.g. saccharin. Suitable base materials include polyethylene glycols, and polyoxyethylene esters and ethers.
