Abstract

1,204,711. Chucks; cutter mountings. SAMUEL OSBORN & CO. Ltd. 27 May, 1968 [26 May, 1967], No. 24672/67. Headings B3B and B3K. A chuck for holding e.g. a milling cutter having an internally threaded bore comprises a body portion 10 and a spindle portion 12 mounted for slight longitudinal movement within a bore 16 in the body portion and having a screwthreaded end 18 on which the milling cutter is threaded. The spindle portion 12 is retained in the body portion by steel balls 24, engaging in dimples or a circumferential groove and being pressed therein by releasable members 30 engaging with internal cam surfaces 32 of a locking ring 34. If a circumferential groove on the spindle portion is used then means for preventing relative rotation of the spindle and body portion is necessary. The locking ring 34 is locked in position by a screw engaging with a dimple in the body portion. In operation to remove a milling cutter that has become wedged on to the screw threaded end 18 the locking ring 34 is rotated to allow the spindle portion to move slightly longitudinally to relieve the clamping pressure from the shoulder 22 against which the milling cutter is pressed.
