Abstract
1,204,549. Recovery of metallic copper from solutions. KENNECOTT COPPER CORP. Nov. 7, 1967 [Feb.27, 1967] , No.50529/67. Heading C7D. A cementation process for the recovery of metallic Cu from Cu-bearing solutions (e.g. weakly acidic leach solutions from mine waste dumps), comprises bringing such a solution and metallic Fe in intimate contact with each other under turbulent conditions to bring about a cementation reaction; and maintaining hydrogen gas under a partial pressure of at least 1À2 atmospheres at the reaction site during the cementation reaction to decrease the consumption of Fe that would otherwise take place. The turbulence may be created by injecting the solution under pressure in the lower part of a reaction vessel. The hydrogen gas may be nascent hydrogen produced during the process. The pressure may be imposed either (a) by a hydrostatic head of 7 ft. or more, e.g. 8-24 ft. of the solution effective on the reaction site or (b) by enclosing the reaction site within a closed reaction vessel and maintaining it under the specified pressure. The cementation reaction may be carried out completely or only during a first stage under the specified pressure. Commercially obtained hydrogen can be injected into the reaction zone.
