Abstract

1,204,405. Pipeline heater. CHISSO CORP. 22 March, 1968 [22 March, 1967], No. 14030/68. Heading H5H. [Also in Division H2] A system comprising an A.C. source, a load, a body to be heated and at least one ferromagnetic pipe for generating heat when current passes through it includes switching means whereby the pipe or the load may be selectively connected to the supply. The body to be heated may be a pipeline 22 used to transport oil from a sea bed oil well which is heated by three ferromagnetic pipes 1, 2, 3 disposed in heat transfer relationship with the pipeline 22. Through the pipe 1 are situated three conductors 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP> and through the pipes 2, 3, conductors 5, 6, respectively. The conductors 5, 6 are connected to the pipes 2, 3 at the ends 14, 16 and to two of the phases of a three-phase supply 20 by switches 9, 10. The conductors 4, 4<SP>1</SP> , 4<SP>11</SP> are connected to the third phase of the supply 20 by a switch 18 and to the end 12 of pipe 1 by a switch 7. The remaining ends 13, 15, 17 of the pipes are connected to the neutral point 19 of the supply 20. With switches 9, 10, 7, 18 closed current flows along conductors 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP>, 5, 6, returning to the neutral 19 by way of pipes 1, 2, 3. Heat is thus generated in the pipes 1, 2, 3 by currents which flow along the inner surfaces of the pipes due to the so-called skin effect, the heat being transferred to the pipeline 22 thereby heating the contents thereof. When the contents are warmed sufficiently switches 9, 10, 7, 18 are opened and switch 8 closed whereupon a load such as a three-phase pump motor 11 is energized by the supply 20, the motor then being used to pump the liquid oil along the pipeline 22. A transformer 21 in the circuit of the pump motor 11 may be provided with a tertiary winding to energize a relay which may be associated with the switch 7 thus automatically opening the switch 7 when the pump motor is energized.
