Abstract

1,204,163. Textile-treating compositions. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 Sept., 1968 [26 June, 1967; 10 May, 1968; 25 June, 1968], Nos. 29424/67, 22326/68 and 30215/68. Heading C3R. [Also in Division D1] A composition used in the treatment of cellulosic textile materials comprises a solution or dispersion in a halogenated hydrocarbon solvent of a resin precondensate which is a condensation product of formaldehyde with a nitrogen-containing compound, or an alkyl ether thereof in which the alkyl groups contain 1-4 carbon atoms, which is capable of reacting with itself under acid conditions to give a fully cured resin and/or is capable of reacting with the hydroxyl groups present in the cellulosic textile material and a catalyst which is an acid or acid-generating substance and which is soluble in the halogenated hydrocarbon solvent. The resin precondensate may be a condensation product of formaldehyde with urea, thiourea, dicyandiamide or an amide, carbamate, aminotriazine, uron, urein, ureide, imidazolidinone, pyrimidone or triazinone or an alkyl ether thereof in which the alkyl group contains 1-4 carbon atoms. The solvent may be trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene; 1: 1: 1 - trichloroethane or a chlorofluorinated hydrocarbon solvent. Suitable catalysts are monochloracetic acid, dodecyl benzene sulphonic acid, 2,2 - bis (hydroxymethyl) butyl phosphonic acid, p - toluene - sulphonate, cetyl pyridinium bromide, stearamidomethyl pyridinium chloride, methane sulphonyl chloride or fluoride, benzene sulphonyl chloride, p - toluene sulphonyl chloride or fluoride or m - benzene - disulphonyl chloride. The composition may also contain lubricants and softeners, e.g. polyethylene waxes and hexadecyl stearate, water repellants, e.g. silicones, methylolstearamide and stearamidomethyl pyridinium chloride, stiffening agents e.g. polyvinyl acetate, and anti-soil and soil release agents, e.g. alkylene glycol/polyalkylene glycol terephthalic acid polyester resins. In Examples (1) polymethoxymethylmelamine is prepared from melamine, methanolic formaldehyde solution to which has been added caustic soda and methanol (2) methoxy methylurea is prepared from urea and methanolic formaldehyde solution to which has been added caustic soda solution and (6) polymethoxymethyl urea/uron resin is prepared from urea, methanolic formaldehyde solution and methanol to which has been added caustic soda solution.
