Abstract
1,204,132. Fluid actuation of switches. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 Jan., 1968 [20 Jan., 1967], No. 3113/67. Heading H1N. The fixed contact of a fluid-pressure diaphragm-type switch comprises a cupro-nickel hollow screw 13 adjustably positioned within the tubular steel inlet member 7. The central portion 19 of a corrugated cupro-nickel diaphragm 5 engages the end of contact 13 upon reduction of pressure in chamber 20. The inlet member 7 is secured to a circular dished plate 9 by outward staking at 8. An aluminium washer 10 provides a gas-tight seal. Insulating washers 6 and 11 separate plate 9 electrically from the diaphragm 5 and swaged steel casing 1, whieh latter is vented at 16 and carries a terminal tag 17. The contact 13 is frictionally retained in its adjusted position by means of a glass-filled nylon washer 14 having a hole eccentrically displaced and held in place by inward staking of the portion 8 over a steel ring 15. The diaphragm 5 has parallel grooves impressed at the centre 19 to prevent oscillation due to possible sealing action against the inlet in contact 13. The casing may have an insulating covering (not shown), moulded from P.V.C., for example, with an aperture about the vent 16 and terminal 17.
