Abstract

1,203,915. Coking coal agglomerates. CANADIAN PATENTS & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 8 April, 1969 [22 April, 19681, No. 18008/69. Heading C5E. A process for making coke comprises agglomerating coal fines, which may be a blend of different coking coals, by preparing an aqueous dispersion of the fines, adding a liquid hydrocarbon, e.g. tar obtained from the subsequent coking, to the dispersion, agitating to produce spherical agglomerates, separating water therefrom, and drying, preheating and carbonizing the agglomerates. A light solvent may be used to dilute the tar, and coke breeze, petroleum coke, anthracite fines and iron oxide may be blended with the fines. The preheated agglomerates may be briquetted before being coked. Reagents, e.g. lime or sodium silicate may be added during the agglomerating step, to aid in separating pyrite from the coal, and an optional aeration step may be applied to the oil and water dispersion before agglomerating, to upgrade the coal fines. The fines may be those normally produced in mining, being about - 14 mesh (Tyler), or coal feed comprising about 80% less than # inch size may be subjected to the agitation step, in which only - 10 mesh agglomerates, the mixture of agglomerates and larger pieces going on to coking as before.
