Abstract

1,203,711. Hair curling tongs. CALOR APPAREILS ELECTRO-DOMESTIQUES. 6 Feb., 1968 [29 Sept., 1967; 17 Nov., 1967], No. 5930/68. Heading A4V. [Also in Division H5] In electrically heated curling tongs comprising a handle 1, a hollow heated rod 2 accommodating a heating element, and a spring-urged hair gripping tongue 3 pivotably mounted at 31 between lugs 32 on the handle, a heat insulating extension 23 is secured to the end of the heated rod and the handle has an outwardly extending flange 13 where it joins the heated rod, the extension and flange being proportioned so that the heated rod is kept out of contact with a plane surface on which the tongs are laid. The extension also provides a means for holding the end of the rod by hand even when it is heated. The tongs have a thermostat 4, preferably comprising a bimetallic strip 41, mounted within the handle in series with the heating element 22, the strip being thermally connected to the heated rod by a copper or aluminium plate 47; the thermostat can be adjusted by a screw 49, accessible through apertures in the rod and handle which are normally closed by a plug 50. The handle is formed of two shell halves 11 and 12, secured together by an elastic ring or band 18 and by a nut 15 and bolt 14 which also serve to unite the handle with the heated rod. A plug having pins 56 is disposed in the end of the handle, for connecting the tongs with a power supply, a two-voltage switch 54 being included in the circuit to adapt the heating element for use with different supply voltages (see Div. H5). There is also an indicator light visible through a window in the handle to show when the heated tube has reached operating temperature. The lever operating the tongs is preferably of channel section to conform with the handle and has a thumb grip 33 on its outer surface. A box 60 is provided for accommodation of the tongs during heating, which has a partition 65 shaped to support the tongs by the aforesaid flange and a housing 66 at one end wherein there is a socket connected with the mains supply for the electrical contact pins 56 on the tong-handle. An on/off switch 73 is situated on the top of the housing, being constructed so that the box lid cannot be closed while the switch is in the on position. The box is preferably constructed to take two pairs of tongs, side by side.
