Abstract

1,203,360. Water-repellent substances. HENKEL & CIE. G.m.b.H. 20 Dec., 1968 [28 Dec., 1967], No. 60639/68. Heading CIA. Water-repellent, oil-absorbing properties are imparted to an inorganic compound by treating said compound in a finely-divided state with 1 to 20% of a compound of general formula ROH where R is an aliphatic or alkylaryl residue with 8 to 26 carbon atoms, at a temperature of 150‹ to 350‹ C. The process may be carried out in an autoclave for 15-150 mins. Specified compounds are (a) basic carbonates of Mg, Zn, Sn, Al, Fe, Pb, Cd, Bi; (b) oxides of Ca, Ba, Sr, Mg, Zn, Al, Fe, Cd, Bi, Ni, Co, Pb; (c) silicates of Al, Ca, Mg and expanded perlite and silicates which are produced by reacting Na or K silicate with salts of di- or tri-valent metals. The mixture produced by heating solid sodium silicate and calcium chloride at 5- 600‹ C. is also referred to. Specified alcohols are lauryl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, dodecanol, hexadecanol, octadecanol, cicosanol and/or synthetic alcohols and mixtures thereof. Preferably alkylphenols, e.g. nonyl phenol having 6 to 16 carbon atoms are used.
