1,203,308. Tablet manufacture. MILES LABORATORIES Inc. 6 Sept., 1968 [2 Oct., 1967 (2); 5 Oct., 1967], No. 42449/68. Heading A5B. Tablets, e.g. for pharmaceutical use, are prepared by compression, using conventional machinery, of a powdered mixture of tablet ingredients comprising, as lubricant, particles of an oil coated with an oil-insoluble, film-forming substance. Other lubricants, in particular siloxane polymers, may also be present and may be combined with the oil or present on the surface coating thereof. Suitable oils are vegetable and animal oils, mineral oils and synthetic oils, e.g. polyethylene glycols. Suitable coating materials are water-soluble gums, e.g. dextrin and starch gums, cellulose derivatives, e.g. hydroxypropyl cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose, agar agar, gelatin, albumin, casein, alginates, carraghunates and synthetic film-formers e.g. polyvinyl pyrrolidone. The coated particles may be prepared by spray drying an emulsion of the oil in an aqueous solution of the film-former. The invention further comprises a tableting lubricant which comprises particles of a lubricating oil as exemplified above, coated with an oil-insoluble, film-forming substance, e.g. a gum, the lubricating oil having suspended therein a siloxane polymer having a viscosity between 240 and 11900 cps of the general formula: where R represents H or an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group and R' represents an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group. Such materials may also be made by spray-drying an emulsion of the oil phase in an aqueous dispersion of the filmforming substance.
