Abstract
1,202,576. Silver recovery process. SUMITOMO KIKAI KOGYO K.K., and FUJI SHASHIN FILM K.K. 12 Sept., 1967, No. 41625/67. Heading C1A. Silver halide is recovered from a solution which also contains organic matter, e.g. a washing solution produced in the manufacture of photographic materials, by subjecting the solution to treatment with an active sludge (defined as river sludge containing soil bacteria which have been cultured for a time using N- and P-containing nutrients) to oxidize the organic matter, and absorbing the silver halide on the active sludge, whence it is recovered after precipitation of the halide plus sludge. The initial solution, which may contain silver bromide, chloride, chlorobromide or iodobromide, is poured into a chamber containing active sludge, and air is passed for 3 to 5 hours, both to stir the mixture and to provide an oxygen content of more than 2 p.p.m. 70-80% of the halide is adsorbed on the sludge and the remainder of the Ag is recovered from the gelatine-free solution by means of a coagulant such as Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 . A flow process is described.
