Abstract

1,202,513. Welding by fusion. STOODY CO. 15 Jan., 1969 No. 2493/69. Heading B3R. [Also in Division C7] In the building-up or rebuilding of a steel workpiece, such as a sheet metal forming roll or back-up roll therefor, platen or die, by incremental deposition of one or more layers of steel, by fusion welding, the workpiece is maintained, during said deposition and preferably until all welding is completed, between a temperature greater than the Ms (start of markensite transformation) temperature of the deposited steel and 1300‹ F., so as to ensure uniform hardness throughout the deposited layer. The deposition may be effected by submerged arc welding, and in the form of beads from rod or wire. On a roll, such beads may be helically deposited. Typical Ms temperatures may range from 350‹ to 750‹ F. Preferably, the minimum workpiece temperature is maintained 50‹ to 100‹ F. higher than Ms. Deposited alloys may include A particular deposited alloy having Ms temperature of 725‹ F. comprises
