Abstract

1,202,495. Bactericidal/detergent compositions. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 5 March, 1969 [10 May, 1968], No. 22327/ 68. Heading A5E. [Also in. Division C5] A bactericidal and detergent composition, in powder or granular form, comprises in admixture (a) a water-soluble polymeric diguanide or salt thereof in which the recurring unit is represented by the formula: wherein X and Y are bridging groups which together supply a total number of carbon atoms directly interposed between adjacent nitrogen atoms which number is greater than 9 and less than 7, and b) a water-soluble alkali metal polyphosphate. A preferred polymeric diguanide is polyhexamethylene diguanide which may be used as the hydrochloride salt. Examples of suitable water-soluble alkali metal polyphosphates are Na 4 P 2 O 7 , Na 6 P 6 O 18 and Na 5 P 3 O 10 . If the polymeric diguanide is used in the form of an aqueous solution it is necessary to incorporate a suitable absorbent filler into the composition, e.g. MgCO 3 optionally in combination with Na 2 CO 3 , NaHCO 3 or NaHCO 3 . Na 2 CO 3 . The composition may also contain non-ionic surface active agents, particularly those obtained 'by condensing alkyl phenols with propylene oxide and ethylene oxide and benzyl ethers of ethoxylated alkyl phenols. Optional ingredients specified are sodium metasilicate, sodium disilicate, carboxymethyl cellulose, optical brightening agents, sodium perborate and anti-foaming agents. The composition was effective at 1% by weight concentration in water.
