[Also in Division A4] A floor treating machine has a treatment element 2 of a disc form, e.g. a polishing brush, located beneath a casing 1 and rotatable about a substantially vertical axis by means such as an electric motor 3, and a handle 10 including manually operable control means adjustable relatively to the casing to effect differential application of the contact pressure of the disc 2 on a floor at selected diametrically opposed regions of contact, and thereby drive the machine over the floor. The said control means comprises a T-shaped handle portion 21 which is rotatable relatively to a socket portion 11, connected by a pivot pin 12 to the casing 1 and held at a desired inclination by a clamping screw and nut device 18, 20 to a slotted arm 16 projecting from the casing 1. The handle portion 21 is cranked at an obtuse angle so that when it is rotated as illustrated in Fig. 2, the socket portion 11, together with the casing 1, is tilted so that the pressure against the floor of one side of the disc 2 is increased to drive the machine forwardly or rearwardly depending upon the direction of tilt of the casing 1. When the handle portion 21 is rotated substantially 90 degrees from the position illustrated in Fig. 2, it may be adjusted to drive the machine laterally. Alternative machines may have more than one brush disc, or a brush disc driven through an eccentric to have a precessing motion, or a suction fan. In further machines the casing may be tilted by mechanism actuated by tilting the handle forwardly or rearwardly, or by cam mechanism actuated, by rotating a handpiece, or by a moving weight adjusted by tilting or rotating a handpiece, or by push-rod or Bowden cable devices, or by hydraulic or pneumatic devices.
