Abstract

1,202,261. Cooling turbo-generator rotors. BROWN BOVERI & CO. Ltd. 25 Oct., 1967 [27 Oct., 1966], No. 48501/67. Heading H2A. In a turbo-generator having in slots of a rotor body 1 a directly liquid cooled rotor feed winding 2, but no means for renewing the gas in the air gap, at least some of the slots contain at least one axial coolant conduit disposed radially outside the winding, extending outside the body to radially within rotor caps 4 over the whole winding heads 3, and connected to a field winding liquid coolant distribution damper 7. The invention is concerned with the heating of the rotor caps and body by eddy currents induced by the air gap field and, the conduits in the embodiment shown are Cu or stainless steel hollow rods 11, 11<SP>1</SP> (31 in Fig. 5) interconnected at one end by a ring header 15, whilst the connection to the chamber 7 at the other end comprises a subdivided ring header 12 and pipes 13, 13<SP>1</SP>. Wedge-shaped members 32 assist heat conduction, damper bars 33 may be provided, and the cooling liquid may be water. In Fig. 2 a magnetic pipe (21) passes from the chamber 7 through grooves in the pole zone to supply the water to a ring header (22) at the far end. The gap contains a cylinder 10 whereby the rotor chamber pressure is reduced below the ambient to reduce frictional losses.
