Abstract

1,202,135. Working stone. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 21 Jan., 1969 [22 Jan., 1968], No. 3358/69. Heading B5E. [Also in Divisions E1 and F4] Mineral is channelled by burner means comprising two flame jet discharge passages, the axes of which are coplanar and which have orifices directed towards a wall of the mineral and spaced by a distance sufficient to prevent overlapping of respective zones of mineral spalling associated with the jets. The burner means comprises internal-combustion burners 14, 16 provided with orifices 22, 24 which are directed at an acute angle towards the mineral wall and which are spaced by a minimum distance h = #0À15 F, where h is in inches and F is the nominal design oxygen flow rate per burner orifice in cubic feet per hour. There may be more than two flame jet discharge passages and these may extend from the same or separate combustion chambers.
