[Alao in Division B8] A machine for sealing envelopes or packets comprises a heated platen 16, a pressure-plate 17, a solenoid 21 for moving the plate towards the platen, a stop 14 for correctly locating the mouth of an envelope between the platen and the plate, and a trip lever 25, Fig. 4 (not shown), associated with the stop 14 and adapted to be moved by the envelope or packet to complete an electrical circuit and thus energize the solenoid when the mouth of an envelope or packet is correctly located against the stop. As shown, the pressure-plate 17 is carried by a frame 18, 19, 22, which may be pulled downwardly against the action of return springs 23 by the solenoid 21. Stop 14 is in the form of a plate, Fig. 4 (not shown), formed with an aperture through which projects the trip lever, in the form of the operating lever of a microswitch. On inserting an envelope or packet in direction "X", past guide 15, between the pressure-plate and the platen, and against stop 14, the microswitch is closed, thus closing the circuit to a timing device, which in turn controls the supply of current to the solenoid 21. Platen 16 may be electrically heated. After the heat-sensitive adhesive of the envelope or packet has been activated to effect sealing, the timing device de-energizes the solenoid and the sealed envelope or packet falls by gravity down slope 11 into a tray 12.
