Abstract

1201774 Super-conducting cables IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 23 Aug 1968 [13 Sept 1967] 41798/67 Headings H1A and A4D A reinforced electrical conductor is made by preparing a continuous length of ductile superconducting material and subsequently applying therealong a length of reinforcing material. Each super-conducting wire comprising e.g. a copper skin 24 on a niobium 44 wt. per cent titanium core 25 is positioned in an associated groove formed in a strip 26 of stabilizing material viz copper. The grooves are then closed thus embedding the super-conducting wires in the copper strip which is subsequently provided with reinforcing wires 33 which are embedded therein in a similar manner i.e. by means of grooves. Square, flat or tubular conductors incorporating different numbers of super-conducting and reinforcing wires are also described Figs. 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 (not shown). The super-conducting wires may be provided with reinforcing material only, the reinforcing material also acting as a stabilizing agent. The reinforcing wires used can be made of copper alloys, non-ferromagnetic steels, brass, tungsten, titanium or titanium alloy and aluminium may be used as the stabilizing material instead of copper.
