[Also in Divisions F2 and F3] A method of making an externally finned cylindrical article comprises providing a plurality of components each of which includes a longitudinally extending arcuate portion, e.g. 10, interconnecting a pair of longitudinally extending flanges, e.g. 10b, 10c, which extend radially outwardly of a cylinder whose axis is the axis of curvature of said arcuate portion and whose radius is the radius of curvature of the arcuate portion, one of said flanges being of greater radial extent than the other, and then assembling the components with said one flange of one component abutting said other flange of an adjacent component in such a manner that they define said cylinder by securing together overlapping portions of the adjacent radially extending flanges. As shown, the finned cylindrical article comprises four components 10-13 each having an arcuate portion 10a- 13a and flanges 10b-13b and 10c-13c, the flanges 10b-13b being three times longer radially than the flanges 10c-13c. The four components are secured together, e.g. by projection welding. An annular disc 14 is secured to one end of the finned cylinder each of the four components being formed of pressed metal. The article can be a projectile casing, the disc 14 then forming a bourrellet, the article, which is finally subjected to treatment and coating operations, being made of the appropriate metal of the proper gauge.
