1,201,266. Vehicle washing apparatus. KLEINDIENST & CO. MASCHINENFABRIK. 20 July, 1967 [20 July, 1966], No. 31505/67. Heading B7J. Vehicle washing apparatus comprises a pair of brushes 1, each pendularly suspended about a pivot 18 from an arm 9 pivoted at 8 to a portal 10, the brushes being rotatably driven by motors 20 in the direction indicated by arrows 24, and there being sensor means 22 which after a predetermined pivoting from the vertical of the brushes, caused by a vehicle to be washed, actuates rams 23 to pivot the arms 9 outwards. The brushes tend to bear against resilient stops 26 under their own weight. In the embodiment of Fig. 5, two pairs of brushes A and B are provided, each brush being suspended from an arm 9 pivoted to portal 10. The pair of brushes A, which are first contacted by the vehicle, are driven by motors 6 in contra-rotation, as indicated by the arrows, so they move by frictional contact towards the vehicle sides. Brush pair B rotate in the opposite direction so that diagonally opposite brushes of the two pairs rotate in the same direction. Springs 12, Fig. 1 (not shown), urge the brushes of each pair towards each other with the arms 9 of pair A parallel to the direction of movement of the vehicle, whilst the arms of pair B are transverse to this direction.
