1,200,699. Acrylic acid derivatives. SHOWA KAGAKU KOGYO K.K. 29 May, 1968 [15 June, 1967], No. 1481/70. Divided out of 1,200,698. Heading C2C The invention relates to acrylic acid derivatives of the formula in which Ar denotes an optionally substituted phenyl group, R denotes an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms, and X denotes COOH, COOR or CN. The compounds are obtainable by reacting a nitrotoluene derivative of the formula with an alkali-metal polysulphide in an alcohol to form an aminobenzaldehyde of the formula which is then reacted with phenylacetic acid or a derivative thereof of the formula ArCH 2 X. Examples are given in which 2-methoxy-4- nitro-toluene is converted into 4-amino-2- methoxy-benzaldehyde which, without isolation, is reacted with benzyl cyanide, p-methylbenzyl cyanide and p-chlorobenzyl cyanide.
