Abstract

1,200,635. Removing occluded gases from roasted coffee. KENCO COFFEE CO. Ltd. 14 Oct., 1968 [16 Oct., 1967], No. 47058/67. Heading A2B. Freshly roasted coffee is admitted into a chamber having a predominently inert gas, preferably nitrogen, atmosphere, and gas is then evacuated from the chamber while at the same time replenishing the inert gas, such that the pressure in the chamber is maintained sub-atmospheric but above predetermined level which is above the vapour pressure of at least the majority of the volatile coffee constituents, the coffee being retained in the chamber for a period of time sufficient for the required amount of occluded gas, mainly carbon dioxide, to have been evolved from the coffee. The thus treated coffee may be packed in plastics material packs, for example in an inert gas atmosphere. A suitable apparatus comprises a gas tight container 1, means 2, 3 for feeding coffee into the container, an inlet 7 for feeding an inert gas to the container and means 4, 5 for simultaneously evacuating gas from the container, and means 9-20 for controlling the rate of flow of gas into and out of the chamber.
